In 2020 adidas Consortium create an ode to the mid 2000’s with the Response CL– a silhouette which incorporates much of what made the Response line so popular, all into one shoe. The Response CL is based on the upper of the Response Cushion from 2003 as well as the tooling which incorporates many mid-to-late 2000s technologies such as Formotion and adiprene. The result is something which is very of the time, yet very relevant for today’s sneaker audience.
A Homage to 2000's running technologies refined and updated to give a fresh take on archive running. The Commonwealth x adidas Response CL is a revised look at the newly released Response CL silhouette based on some archive oddities ranging from the 2003 Response Cushion, to the 2007 Response Control 7.
Commonwealth’s point of view to balance traditional and novelty, is showcased through it’s asymmetrical color blocking and a selected materials story. The lateral side of the shoe features minimalistic tints of warm white, while the medial side is expressed through a muted palette of earth tones. The Commonwealth x adidas Response features a mix of stitched down leather, molded suede panels, and hairy suede; as well as 3-D spacer mesh upper, Synthetic leather overlays, TPU stripes, EVA midsole, and an Adi prene insert forefoot midsole.
For Design Director Omar Quiambao, this project was about “trying to bring back a sense of discovery”. With today’s access to information, there leaves little room for discovery on the retail floor. We wanted that “discovery” to be the focus for our latest collaboration with adidas Consortium, hence the contrasting palettes between the lateral and medial sides of the sneaker. We sought to interpret the process in comparing it to stumbling onto an oasis in the vastness of the warm sands of the desert.
The Commonwealth x adidas Consortium "RESPONSE" releases exclusively at Commonwealth flagships around the globe and online at www.commonwealth-ftgg.com on Saturday, November 21st.
